The 10 Best Bookstores in Richmond (2026)
Richmond has a lively book scene that spans independent shops, used-book racks, children’s nooks and comic specialists. This list ranks the city’s top bookstores using a Google-review–based methodology: we compute a weighted (Bayesian) score that balances average rating with review volume, and updated it in 2026. If you’re hunting for a well-reviewed local shop in Richmond or nearby suburbs, this guide highlights places with strong user ratings and enough reviews to be reliable. We focus solely on measurable Google data rather than editorial buzz, so the ranking reflects what reviewers have consistently said.
This ranking is computed from Google reviews (our method). Listings marked Partner are paid advertising spots: they sit alongside the ranking without changing its order.

Frequently asked questions
How should I choose which bookstore to visit in Richmond?
Consider what you want—new titles, used books, children’s selections, or comics—and check the Google category and recent reviews for each shop. Look at the number of reviews as well as the average rating to judge consistency, and call ahead if you need a specific title or service.
What do books typically cost at local bookstores?
Prices vary by type of store and condition of the book: new hardcovers tend to cost more than paperbacks, and used books are usually cheaper. Expect a wide range and compare a few shops or ask staff about discounts, membership programs, or special sales.
How is this ranking built?
The list is based on Google review data and uses a Bayesian-style weighted score that balances average rating with the number of reviews, so high ratings supported by more reviews score higher than the same rating with fewer reviews. The data was updated in 2026 to reflect current Google listings and reviewer feedback.
When should I call a bookstore before going?
Call ahead if you are looking for a specific title, asking about inventory, planning to attend an event, or need accommodations like curbside pickup. Calling can save time and confirm hours, temporary closures, or any limited services.
